Licensing Requirements
There are two types of licences required one for the pilot RePL, and one for the company a ReOC.
The step-by-step process to obtain a drone pilot license (RePL) in Australia:
1. Eligibility Check:
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), which typically includes being at least 16 years old and having the necessary medical clearance.
2. Enroll in RePL Training Course:
Enroll in a CASA-approved Remote Pilot License (RePL) training course offered by a certified training organisation.
3. Complete Theory Component:
Successfully complete the theoretical component of the RePL training course, which covers essential topics such as airspace regulations, safety procedures, meteorology, and drone operation principles.
4. Complete Practical Training:
Undergo practical flight training with a certified instructor to develop your piloting skills and operational knowledge. This training ensures you can safely and proficiently operate a drone in various scenarios.
5. Take and Pass Theory Examination:
Schedule and sit for the RePL theory examination at an approved testing center. Achieve a passing score to proceed to the next step.
6. Submit RePL Application:
Gather all required documentation, including your examination results, and submit an application for your Remote Pilot License (RePL) to CASA. This typically involves completing an online application form and paying the required fees.
7. Await Approval:
CASA will review your application and documentation. If everything meets the requirements, you will receive approval for your RePL.
8. Receive Remote Pilot License:
Upon approval, CASA will issue your Remote Pilot License, granting you the authority to legally operate drones for commercial purposes in Australia.
9. Keep License Current:
Ensure you adhere to CASA's renewal requirements to keep your license current. Stay informed about any regulatory updates or changes to maintain compliance with aviation laws and regulations.
By following these steps, you can obtain your drone pilot license in Australia and legally operate drones for commercial purposes.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to obtain a Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC) for drone pilots in Australia:
1. Eligibility Check:
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for obtaining a ReOC. This typically includes being a registered business entity or operating under one.
2. Designate Key Personnel:
Appoint key personnel within your organisation, including a Chief Remote Pilot (CRP) who will be responsible for overseeing drone operations.
3. Training and Education:
Ensure all key personnel and remote pilots complete relevant training courses, such as the Remote Pilot License (RePL) training for remote pilots and the Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC) training for key personnel.
4. Compile Operations Manual:
Develop a comprehensive Operations Manual that outlines your organisation's procedures for safe and compliant drone operations. This manual should cover areas such as flight planning, risk management, safety protocols, emergency procedures, and compliance with aviation regulations.
5. Prepare Supporting Documentation:
Gather all necessary documentation required for the ReOC application, including your Operations Manual, insurance details, and proof of key personnel qualifications.
6. Submit Application:
Complete and submit the ReOC application form to CASA along with all required documentation. Ensure that your application is accurate and complete to expedite the review process.
7. Undergo Assessment:
CASA will review your application and conduct an assessment of your organisation's operations, procedures, and safety management systems. This may involve site visits and interviews with key personnel.
8. Address any Findings:
If CASA identifies any areas for improvement or non-compliance during the assessment, address these findings promptly and make necessary revisions to your Operations Manual or procedures.
9. Receive ReOC Approval:
Upon successful completion of the assessment and resolution of any findings, CASA will issue your Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC), granting your organisation authorisation to conduct commercial drone operations.
10. Maintain Compliance:
Ensure ongoing compliance with CASA regulations and requirements by regularly reviewing and updating your Operations Manual, conducting internal audits, and staying informed about changes to regulations or best practices in drone operations.
Following these steps will help you obtain a ReOC for drone pilots in Australia and establish your organisation as a reputable and compliant operator in the industry.
